Protecting 30 percent of the world’s ocean by 2030 requires more than political commitments. It requires governments, donors and conservation organisations to understand what needs to happen and how to finance it. The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) asked Rewire to help communicate its regional approach to marine conservation. The aim was to build support for long-term investment.
Making the case for long-term ocean protection
Caribbean economies depend on healthy reefs and coastlines for food, tourism and protection from storms. Yet protecting marine areas effectively requires sustained financing, strong national systems and cooperation across countries.
CBF works through National Conservation Trust Funds across the Caribbean to channel long-term conservation finance. Its regional 30×30 project supports countries to establish and effectively manage marine protected areas in line with the global commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.
Building communications around 30×30
Rewire supported CBF’s communications with materials for different audiences and channels. These ranged from donor-facing factsheets and social media packages to donor decks and event collateral. The work helped CBF communicate the initiative across its fundraising and wider engagement activities.
The materials were used at key moments in the global ocean agenda, including the UN Ocean Conference in Nice in 2025 and the 2026 UN Ocean Conference in Nairobi.
As the initiative developed, the focus also shifted from programme development towards political commitment. At the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, Caribbean governments came together to sign the Actioning Blue Declaration, setting out a shared vision for ocean protection through 2030.
Rewire designed the accompanying publication, Actioning Blue: A Caribbean 30×30 vision and roadmap for our ocean. The publication translates that political commitment into a clear regional vision, bringing together the case for action, the challenges facing the Caribbean and a roadmap towards 2030.
