Internal displacement reached another record high in 2024. By the end of the year, 83.4 million people were living in internal displacement worldwide — more than twice as many as a decade earlier, when the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), the leading source of data and analysis on internal displacement, published its first Global Report on Internal Displacement.
Behind that global figure are different crises, causes and regional realities. Conflict and violence left 73.5 million people internally displaced, while disasters accounted for another 9.8 million. Communicating that scale means more than publishing the numbers. It means helping audiences understand what is driving them, where displacement is happening and why it matters.
Bringing the Global Report on Internal Displacement to social media
IDMC produces the world’s leading data and analysis on internal displacement. Its annual Global Report on Internal Displacement, or GRID, brings that evidence together to provide a global picture of displacement caused by conflict, violence and disasters.
For the launch of GRID 2026, IDMC needed a social media campaign package that could take the report’s findings beyond the publication itself. The challenge was to turn a large and complex body of evidence into content that audiences could understand quickly, while preserving the meaning behind the data.
Turning global displacement data into a social media campaign
We worked with IDMC to translate the report’s key findings into a focused package of social media content. The campaign established the scale of internal displacement globally, then explored the different forces driving it and the regions experiencing some of its greatest impacts.
Across the campaign, headline statistics were paired with short explanations and visual storytelling to provide context around the numbers.
The social content highlighted record levels of displacement linked to conflict and disasters, while drawing attention to the regional patterns behind the global figures. Together, the assets created different routes into GRID 2026 and encouraged audiences to explore the evidence in greater depth.
The visual approach followed IDMC’s established identity while creating a consistent system for communicating statistics, comparisons and key messages across social channels.
By breaking a complex evidence base into focused digital stories, the campaign helped extend the reach of IDMC’s research and support its wider role in making internal displacement visible.
